Utah fixes records glitches to gun background check system

OGDEN, Utah – Utah officials say they have repaired computer glitches that could have potentially allowed residents restricted from gun ownership to buy firearms. They say it’s not possible to know how many restricted people purchased guns.

The Standard-Examiner reports the first glitch occurred in February 2017 and prevented court records of mentally ill people who are prohibited from purchasing guns from flowing into the federal background check database.

State courts officials say the glitch went unnoticed until last month, when FBI personnel contacted the state Department of Public Safety.

Another glitch occurred in November that prevented hundreds of records from being entered into the state’s gun background check system. Officials say that glitch also went unnoticed until last month.
