Plans for logging at forest include some clear cutting

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – An official says plans for logging at Hoosier National Forest include clear cutting in some areas.

The (Bloomington) Herald-Times reports Mike Chaveas, supervisor of the Hoosier National Forest, told a recent gathering at the Monroe County Public Library that the Houston South project would cut some timber on about 4,000 acres (1,619 hectares) south of the Charles C. Deam Wilderness area.

Of that, up to 417 acres (169 hectares) would be slated for clear felling or clear cutting. Other areas would see a thinning of trees.

Chaveas said the U.S. Forest Service harvests timber in national forests as a tool to help the agency sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the forest “to meet the needs of present and future generations.”
