Man injured while free diving in Okanagan Lake has died
KELOWNA – A man who was critically injured while free diving near Paul’s Tomb on Sunday has died.
The B.C. Coroners Service says 27-year-old Kevin John Stephens was free diving in Okanagan Lake and had submerged for several minutes before his girlfriend, also a free diver, brought him to the surface.
“After several minutes she noticed he hadn’t resurfaced and thought he might have swam out to a friend’s boat," Cpl. Joe Duncan said earlier this week. "After she brought him to the surface, two brothers on paddle boards brought him to shore.”
The fire department was called out to assist ambulance personnel just after 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 9. CPR was in progress and the victim was flown by helicopter to Kelowna General Hospital.
Today, Aug. 12, Duncan said the man died from his injuries.
Free diving is an extreme sport where participants try to go as deep as possible for as long as possible without the aid of oxygen.
