Tour company closing due to tourism decline after eruption
HILO, Hawaii – A Hilo-based tour company has announced it’s closing due to the decline in tourism on the Big Island after the Kilauea eruption.
Jack’s Tours announced on its website earlier this week that its last day would be Tuesday.
The company said that the downturn in tourism has left it unable to continue operations, especially with no foreseeable improvement in the near future.
The company has been offering half-day volcano tours on the island for more than 50 years.
It also provided narrated tours and ground transportation services.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Aug. 9 would have been the company’s 53rd anniversary.
The eruption, which began in May, has also caused problems for other Big Island businesses.
