Apple Triathlon president finishes 15 year run

KELOWNA – After 15 years as president of the Apple Triathlon, Richard Montgomery is crossing the finish line and calling it quits.

Montgomery has been head of the city’s biggest annual race since 2000 and says in that time he has seen participation go from roughly 300 racers to more than 1,800 and host six National Championships.

“I have worked with thousands of athletes and volunteers who inspire me every year,” he says in a media release. “I take pride in knowing I have been one of the members of a group that has brought millions of dollars in economic benefit to our community as well as encouraging people to live a healthy active life through participation in sport.”

Montgomery, who is also a lawyer, avid skier, swimmer and cyclist, will remain president until the end of this year’s Apple Triathlon on August 22 and 23. His successors will be announced sometime after the event.

This will be the 33rd year in a row the Pushor-Mitchell Apple Triathlon will be held in Kelowna.
