Wildfire smokes Rock Creek music festival

PENTICTON – The Rock Creek fire has claimed another victim, this time in the form of an annual music festival.

Ponderosa Music and Arts Festival organizers have announced the Rock Creek event will not take place this year.

They explain in a media safety concerns have been raised by local government officials due to the active Rock Creek wildfire burning in the area.

"Due to the dynamic nature of the fire we have continued to keep a close watch on its activity and how it may impact the festival," the release says. "As we have always said, we are in no position to put the safety of our guests, staff, and others at risk."

The music festival was scheduled to take place this coming weekend, Aug. 21 to Aug. 23.

Event organizers are asking everyone to spread the news about the event's cancellation to those planning to make the trip to Rock Creek this weekend.

The three day festival has been taking place at the Rock Creek fairgrounds since 2013.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
