Osoyoos Lake drowning victim identified

OSOYOOS – The B.C. Coroners Service has released the name of the young girl who drowned while wading in Osoyoos Lake last week.

Naziha Mohammed, 12, of Calgary was wading with a friend near Haynes Point on the west side of the lake around 7:30 p.m., Aug. 17, when rough water caused her to slip into deeper water, according to a media release.

Her friend went for help, initiating a frantic search, which ended 30 minutes later with the discovery of her body by a parks official in two metres of water, the coroner says.

Mohammed was rushed to South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Both the Coroners Service and the RCMP continue to investigate the death.

The drowning was the second in Osoyoos Lake this summer.

A 34-year-old man from North Vancouver fell off his Sea-Doo and drowned in June. His body was found on Aug. 16.
