AMSTERDAM – Serbian authorities have extradited a pregnant woman to the Netherlands who is suspected of trying to travel to Syria or Iraq to join jihad fighters there.
Prosecutors say the 26-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, was arrested in Belgrade on Sept. 9 and arrived back in the Netherlands on Thursday.
Prosecutors say Dutch authorities had twice earlier stopped her from travelling to territory controlled by the Islamic State group but had no legal grounds to detain her. She is due to appear in court Friday.
Intelligence agencies believe some 260 Dutch citizens have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join groups like Islamic State since 2012.
