The Latest: Gov. Brown will continue talks on Aliso Canyon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Latest on Porter Ranch residents urging Gov. Jerry Brown to permanently close the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility (all times local):

Gov. Jerry Brown’s office is making no commitments about a permanent closure of the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility.

Southern California residents who live near the facility want him to permanently close it after a gas well leak lasting four months. Many say they experienced health symptoms including headaches, nausea and nosebleeds.

About 15 residents met with the Democratic governor’s staff on Wednesday at the state capitol.

Helen Attai of Granada Hills says no conclusion was reached in the meeting but staff left with a better understanding of residents’ health concerns.

She says they listened closely to residents.

The gas storage facility can’t return to normal operations until all 114 remaining wells pass a battery of safety tests or are plugged, a process that is ongoing.

Residents of Porter Ranch in Southern California are urging Gov. Jerry Brown to permanently close the nearby Aliso Canyon gas storage facility.

The facility has been crippled since the gas leak began in October and last 16 weeks until it was capped in February. Residents are concerned by Southern California Gas Co.’s moves toward reopening it, citing health risks and potentially dangerous wells.

About 15 residents visited the state capitol Wednesday to hold a rally and meet with Brown’s staff.

Environmental groups say a shutdown of Aliso Canyon is good a chance to move toward renewable energy.

The facility is the largest natural gas storage plant in the state. SoCalGas has warned its closure could lead to blackouts.

Thousands of residents left their homes after the gas well blowout with headaches, nausea and nosebleeds.
