KGHM gives verbal agreement to fund the city’s independent Ajax review

KAMLOOPS – KGHM International has agreed to fund the city’s $300,000 independent review of its own Ajax project, Mayor Peter Milobar said this afternoon, Aug. 26.

“They don't feel opposed to it…and we're following up with that,” Milobar said, adding KGHM asked for the request in writing before it would completely agree to terms. 

The Ministry of the Environment will ultimately decide if a mine will be built on the outskirts of Kamloops. The city, however, is hiring its own consultant to ask Kamloops specific questions and interpret technical information expected in the application.

The consultant will most likely be SLR Consulting Ltd. out of Vancouver.

“(KGHM have) indicated that they've been open to a review through the city independently,” Milobar says. He expects the city will submit the written request within the next few days.

The city also approached the Kamloops Area Preservation Association with the same request for funding, but they declined. The association and several other anti-Ajax groups formed a coalition to launch a crowdfunding campaign and fund their own independent review.
