Lumby grandmother performs river rescue

In a moment of panic, a Lumby grandmother acted on instinct and jumped into a raging river behind her seven-year-old grandson.

Lumby RCMP Cpl. Henry Proce says the boy was swept into the Shuswap River just below the falls May 26.

"The boy was pulled from the swift water by his grandmother who was subsequently swept downstream herself," Proce says. "It was extremely fortunate that she was able to drag herself from  the river near the fish hatchery and suffered only mild hypothermia."

The 58-year-old grandmother does not wish to be recognized for her actions.

"(She stated) she only did what any grandmother would do," Proce says.

Due to recent snow melt and heavy rain, the RCMP are reminding people to be extremely cautious near waterways.

"The banks might be unstable and could give way from your weight," Proce warns.
