The Latest: Townhomes damaged in Northern California blaze

EMERYVILLE, Calif. – The Latest on massive fire in the San Francisco Bay Area (all times local):

10:30 a.m.

A massive fire burned down an apartment building under construction in the San Francisco Bay Area and damaged or destroyed at least five nearby townhomes.

No one was injured in the blaze that started in Emeryville near the Oakland border before dawn Wednesday. Dozens of residents were evacuated.

Crews got the fire under control but will remain on the scene cleaning up and checking for hot spots throughout the day.

Vehicles parked outside the empty building stood charred, their tires melted, while windows in the apartment complex across the street cracked from the heat.
