Ruined road trips and hefty fines: Why speeding isn’t worth it

VERNON — In the words of RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk, getting a speeding ticket is not fun. Getting your vehicle impounded is even worse. Especially if you're from out of town.

Molendyk says officers caught two vehicles speeding through a construction zone on Highway 97 last week.

"(The) vehicles were impounded after the drivers were caught doing 141 and 138 (km/h) in the posted 90 km zone approaching the construction speed zone by Gatzke road," Molendyk says, adding fines are double in posted construction areas. "The hazard these two vehicles caused as they passed other vehicles as well as to the construction workers that were working in the zone was great."

The drivers were each given an excessive speeding ticket of $368 and they face a $1000 fine in penalty points annually for the next three years.

"One of the drivers was from the lower mainland and his plans for the weekend changed a great deal," Molendyk says. "The North Okanagan Traffic Section would like to remind the public to slow down as the summer driving season is upon us."
