Republican Party takes tougher stance on China than in 2012

WASHINGTON – The Republican Party’s new policy platform takes stock of four years of change in China, and its assessment is not pretty.

It says China’s territorial claims are “preposterous,” and that the cult of founding Communist leader Mao Zedong is coming back.

The platform, which covers U.S. domestic and foreign policies, was adopted at this week’s Republican National Convention.

The party is meeting in Ohio, and is set to anoint Donald Trump as its candidate in November’s presidential election.

The document is intended to guide Republican policymaking but does not necessarily reflect Trump’s thinking.

While campaigning, Trump has focused on China’s alleged cheating at global trade.

Beijing has denounced Trump’s threats of economic retaliation, but many Chinese observers welcome his focus on economic issues instead of human rights.
