Penticton search and rescue help find lost hikers and a missing person

PENTICTON – The volunteers with Penticton Search and Rescue were called out twice last night to find lost hikers, and then to find a missing person.

Two young women from Quebec were hiking near Brent Mountain yesterday afternoon, Sept. 20, when they became disoriented and lost, according to a media release from Penticton Search and Rescue.

The women had enough of a signal on their cell phone to call for help. The phone was pinged, which gave searchers their approximate location at about 7,000 feet elevation on Sheep Rock Mountain.

“Staying together and staying where they were, was critical to their rescue,” search technician Mike Porter says in the release. “Conditions were not ideal with rain, cold temperatures and high wind, and hypothermia was a considerable threat to these women.”

The women were rescued around 1:30 a.m. today.

Search and rescue crews were also called out by the Penticton RCMP to help find a missing person in the Skaha Bluffs area just south of the city yesterday.

The person was located safely.
