Rash of theft from vehicles in Kelowna

KELOWNA – Despite an awareness campaign launched a few weeks ago, there were numerous reports of theft from vehicles in Kelowna over the weekend.

RCMP says the car break-ins happened in the Selkirk Drive area in Glenmore with thieves stealing credit cards, cash, wallets and sunglasses.

Cpl. Joe Duncan with Kelowna RCMP is asking people to follow these tips to prevent thefts:

– Park in open, visible areas. Avoid parking behind fences and hedges.

– At home, light your driveway at night. Elsewhere, park in well-lit areas near pedestrian traffic.

– Remove all valuables from plain view, even if your car is locked. Take the items with you or secure them in the trunk out of sight.

– Report any suspicious persons or activities near a vehicle in your neighbourhood to police immediately, and let the police determine if it’s a crime in progress.

Last month, the RCMP crime prevention unit unveiled a new campaign to remind people to 'lock it or lose it,' aimed at reducing the number of thefts from vehicles in the city.
