‘Wildfire,’ ‘Sweeney Todd’ among top winners at Dora Mavor Moore Awards

TORONTO – Factory Theatre’s “Wildfire” was the top winner in the general theatre division at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

The dark comedy picked up prizes for best production, best new play and best direction at a ceremony at Toronto’s Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.

Presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, the Doras handed out a total of 46 honours Monday for excellence in local theatre, dance and opera.

Talk is Free Theatre’s “Sweeney Todd” led the musical division with wins in five categories, including best production, best direction and best original choreography.

Tapestry Opera’s science-fiction composition “R.U.R. A Torrent of Light” racked up six awards, while the Bad New Days production “Italian Mime Suicide” swept five of the categories in the independent theatre division.

“In My Body,” co-presented by dance Immersion, Canadian Stage and TO Live, took four awards in the dance division.
