Okanagan College to host seventh annual Powwow

KELOWNA – Okanagan College is hosting its seventh annual traditional powwow at the Kelowna campus.

Richard Jackson Jr. of the Westbank First Nation will be the emcee of the event, which will bring together Aboriginal students and community members from across the region. Richard has more than 40 years of knowledge and experience in directing powwows; in his role as an A.H.F. Counselor with the Westbank First Nation he travels the powwow circuit encouraging youth to remember and honour their traditions.

The event will include drumming from Birch Creek, who are the host drum, as well as guest drumming from Iron Mountain. Dancers will perform in categories of traditional, fancy, grass and jingle.

The general public is invited to attend this free event.

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015
