Court awaiting results of mental assessment for Ashcroft man accused of murder

KAMLOOPS – The trial for Shane Gyoba, the man accused of murdering his uncle in Ashcroft last year is waiting on a psychological fitness assessment ordered by Justice Dev Dley this morning, Sept. 28.

The matter has been put over until Oct. 26 in Kamloops Supreme Court.

Shane’s uncle, Ed Gyoba, was found dead in his backyard on June 2, 2014. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Emergency responders found the body wrapped in garbage bags next to a shallow grave.

The trial began in late summer but was suspended Aug. 18. After completion of the review, Dley will determine on how to proceed with trial which may include a defence that Gyoba was not criminally responsible for the crime because of a mental disorder.
