No verdict, trial ends for Michigan mom charged with murder

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the case of a Michigan woman charged with murder in the death of her 6-month-old son who was left in a car seat in a sweltering home.

A Kent County judge declared a mistrial Wednesday after five days of deliberations. Prosecutor Chris Becker says he’ll take 23-year-old Lovily Johnson to trial again.

Johnson was charged with child abuse and first-degree murder. The jury was also allowed to consider second-degree murder as a possible verdict.

Police say the boy was ignored for parts of three days last year in an attic bedroom that was 90 degrees. Johnson’s attorney says she was overwhelmed by being a young mother and caring for other children. He tried to cast doubt on the cause of death.
