Woman recovering from bear bite in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A woman in Alaska is recovering after being bitten by a brown bear while she was hiking on a trail with her two dogs.

The woman was treated at a hospital and released following the late Sunday afternoon attack at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge south of Anchorage. Bear warning signs have been posted along the trail.

Refuge officials say the woman first saw the bear about 20 feet away when it stood up near the Kenai River, where bear activity typically increases in June with the arrival of salmon. Officials say the bear went after the woman when she fell while retreating.

The bear left after it became distracted or pursued one of the dogs. Both dogs have been reunited with the owner.

It’s the second such attack in days after another woman was injured by a bear Friday at Denali National Park, north of Anchorage.
