City of Penticton continues to seek a solution to leaking leisure pool

PENTICTON –  City staff and professional engineers continue to seek a solution to the Penticton Community Centre leisure pools leaky drains.

The pool was scheduled to reopen following a summer closure to replace slippery deck tiles around the leisure and main pools on Sept. 14, but as staff was refilling the leisure pool, a leak was detected.

The leisure pool has been closed since then, as city workers and professionals, including structural engineers, work to resolve the problem.

“The solution has yet to be determined,” Penticton recreation manager Lori Mullin says. "We’re anxiously looking at when we can reopen, but that will depend on what option is chosen to fix the problem."

She says it takes three days to refill, treat and bring the water up to temperature.

City of Penticton communications officer Simone Blais says city staff identified cracks in three of the pool’s five fibreglass drains. She says staff and professionals are working on the best solution to fix the problem, but have not yet identified what that option will be.

As yet, there is no timeline for the pool’s reopening.

“We want to get the public back into the pool as soon as possible,” she says. “As soon as we have more information, we’ll be passing it on."

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
