The most common traffic violation observed by Lumby RCMP in one day at one intersection

LUMBY – There was some good news, and some bad news, when police spent a day observing driving habits in Lumby last week.

Prompted by numerous complaints about bad driving in the school zone and at the four way stop at Shuswap Avenue and Vernon Street, police dispatched an officer to the area on Friday, Oct. 2.

“Despite spending an hour in the school zone over the day the highest speed the officer saw was 37 kilometres per hour,” RCMP Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy says. “While this is excellent news, and we commend the drivers in Lumby (for) slowing down in the school zone to keep their children safe, our officer did note a lot of other offences.”

The most staggering was 78 seatbelt violations, she says, adding the infractions were merely observed and no one was written a ticket.

The officer on patrol also saw — and wrote tickets for — 12 people who failed to stop at the four-way stop at Shuswap Avenue and Vernon Street, five people using electronic devices, three people without valid driver’s licenses, and one person who didn’t have insurance.

“RCMP are reminding drivers that we patrol throughout all of our communities and will enforce the rules of the road at all times,” Noseworthy says.
