Warning issued following rash of overdoses in the South Okanagan

PENTICTON – Concern over the rash of drug overdoses in the South Okanagan is growing, with health officials joining the RCMP in warning the public.

A cautionary warning was issued by Oliver and Osoyoos RCMP yesterday, Oct. 8, and today Interior Health also issued a warning about the recent spike in overdoses.

Interior Health is warning residents to 'think twice' about illicit drug use following the sudden increase in overdoses over the past two weeks, calling the instances, 'unusual and concerning to Interior Health officials.'

“All substance use carries an inherent risk to a person. The risk is even greater with street drugs because you never know what they may contain. Often street drugs have been mixed with other substances and that can have serious consequences for the user,” Interior Health Harm Reduction Coordinator Jeff Walsh says in a release.

Authorities have yet to determine what exactly is causing the overdoses and RCMP and Interior Health continue to investigate.

While drug use is not recommended at all, Interior Health offers these tips to help reduce risk:

– Don’t mix different drugs
– Don’t take drugs when alone
– Take a small sample of the drug before taking a usual dose
– Never experiment with higher doses
– Keep an eye out for friends — stay together and look out for each other
– Recognize signs of an overdose. Get medical help as soon as possible
– If someone thinks they are suffering an overdose, or think they are witnessing one, call 9-1-1 immediately

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
