6 authors of books-in-progress receive $35,000 grants
NEW YORK – A Guantanamo investigation and a memoir about Hurricane Katrina and the fate of one house are among six books-in-progress for which the authors are receiving $35,000 grants.
On Thursday, the Whiting Foundation announced its inaugural round of Creative Nonfiction grants. The writers include Sarah M. Broom for her Katrina book “The Yellow House” and Timothy N. Golden for “Nowhere Land: America and Its Enemies at Guantanamo.”
The other recipients are Deborah Baker for “The Last Englishman,” Joshua Roebke for “The Invisible World: The Story of Physics in the 20th Century,” Sarah Elizabeth Ruden for a new translation of “The Confessions of Augustine” and John Jeremiah Sullivan for “The Prime Minister of Paradise.”
The foundation is known for its annual Whiting Awards, $50,000 grants to 10 emerging artists.
