Revived air quality program in South Okanagan-Similkameen up for discussion

PENTICTON – A Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen program that was axed in 2010 could come before the board of directors for discussion once again.

Between 2006-2010, the regional district had an inter-regional committee that was meeting regularly between the RDOS, the Central Okanagan Regional District and the North Okanagan Regional District. The RDOS also had an air quality coordinator and an educational program that encouraged property owners and agriculturalists to look at wood chipping as an alternative to burning. Programs were also run to encourage the replacement of inefficient wood stoves.

The Central Okanagan is the only regional district in the valley continuing with an air quality program today, sustained by an annual budget of $150,000 annually. The feasibility of reviving an inter-regional program was recently raised at a meeting held between the regional districts. The Central Okanagan Regional District sees the issue of air quality as a valley wide one, noting air can’t be controlled between regional district boundaries.

It was suggested by RDOS regional district Chief Administrative Officer Bill Newell in an administrative report at a recent board meeting if any directors are interested in air quality as an issue, it could be discussed further at a Strategic Planning Workshop on Oct. 29.

Alternatively, he suggested the Central Okanagan Regional District be notified if there is no interest in pursuing the issue. Depending on board response, the matter could come up for further discussion at the Strategic Planning Workshop next week.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
