The Latest: Clemency denied for Georgia death row inmate

ATLANTA – The Latest on the clemency hearing for a Georgia death row inmate scheduled to be executed Thursday (all times local):

6:05 p.m.

The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has denied clemency for an inmate scheduled to be executed later this week.

The board on Wednesday declined to commute the sentence of 60-year-old John Wayne Conner after holding a hearing on the matter earlier in the day. Conner is set to be executed Thursday at the state prison in Jackson by injection of the barbiturate pentobarbital.

Conner was convicted of beating his friend J.T. White to death in January 1982 during an argument after a night of drinking and marijuana use.

The parole board is the only entity authorized to commute a death sentence in Georgia. The board did not give a reason for denying clemency, which is customary.
