Lake County history museum to open Saturday in Libertyville
LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – A museum that presents a chronological walk through Lake County history opens Saturday in Libertyville, north of Chicago.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that the Bess Bower Dunn Museum is a $1.6 million retrofit of a corporate office space. It features a 20-foot-long model of a Dryptosaurus dinosaur thought to have lived in Lake County millions of years ago. There’s also a 40-foot mural of Lake Michigan and 200 artifacts on display. Other exhibits feature the frontier and Civil War eras.
The museum has about 20,000 artifacts in its collection that will be periodically rotated. It’s named after the county’s first official historian.
The museum opens 18 months after the Lake County Forest Preserve District closed, dismantled and repurposed its Discovery Museum in Wauconda.
