Regional District to review site-acquisition act

Regional District of Central Okanagan board members will review in their Monday meeting the School Site Acquisition Charge Act, which permits the district to collect $605 per residential unit for school sites starting next week.

The charge is to partially cover the cost of expanding educational facilities. Projections for student enrolment in the next decade are that the Central Okanagan School District will need a middle school in Rutland, a secondary school in Glenmore, a middle school in Lake Country, and a new elementary school and middle school in the Mission.
The school district hopes to receive $10 million from developers and another $30 million from the province in the best 10 years for the expansion.
While all five governmental bodies in the Central Okanagan will collect the $605-per-residential unit fee under the School Site Acquisition Charge Act, the Act doesn't apply to new housing on Indian reserves.
