JERUSALEM – Israeli police say a Palestinian was killed after throwing fire bombs at officers in Jerusalem, in one of several clashes during Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day.
Spokeswoman Luba Samri said Wednesday that masked Palestinians attacked officers with fire bombs on Tuesday night in Silwan, a predominantly Arab neighbourhood in east Jerusalem where some Israelis live under guard.
She says the officers opened fire because they felt their lives were in danger.
The Palestinian Health Ministry says a 20-year-old man was killed.
Police beefed up security in Jerusalem ahead of the holiday after a shooting rampage by a Palestinian gunman killed two Israelis this week.
Palestinian assailants have killed 36 Israelis and two Americans over the past year. Some 220 Palestinians were killed in that time, mostly attackers, Israel says.
