Policeman, symbol of Brazil’s anti-corruption push, arrested

RIO DE JANEIRO – A high-profile federal police agent seen as a symbol of Brazil’s crackdown on corruption has been convicted of facilitating contraband.

Newton Ishii has often been the lead officer arresting high-profile people accused in a probe of kickbacks involving the state oil company Petrobras. Dozens of politicians and businessmen have been ensnared and Ishii was often photographed leading the handcuffed suspects to police vehicles.

Ishii was arrested Tuesday after being convicted to more than four years in prison for facilitating smuggling across the Brazilian-Paraguayan border.

The irony is not lost on Brazilians. On social media, several manipulated images were circulating of Ishii arresting himself.
