A selection of Canadian reaction to the Florida shooting massacre
A wide range of Canadian political leaders and members of the LGBTQ community reacted Sunday to Sunday’s mass shooting that killed at least 50 people and injured dozens more at a gay nightclub in Florida. Here are some of the comments:
—
“I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn today so many people have been killed and injured following a mass shooting in Orlando, Florida. While authorities are still investigating and details continue to be confirmed, it is appalling that as many as 50 lives may have been lost to this domestic terror attack targeting the LGBTQ2 community.” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a statement.
—
“We must remain steadfast and strongly condemn terrorism, in all its forms, around the world.” Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition, on Facebook.
—
“My heart fills with tears for the victims in Orlando, and rage against the hatred that killed them. My husband and I are in Quesnel to celebrate their second #LGBT pride festival. A small community uniting for love, not hate.” Spencer Chandra Herbert, an openly gay member of the British Columbia legislature.
—
“It reminds us that hate and discrimination are still a big part of this society, and that because of this, some of our brothers and sisters this morning lost their lives.” Mathieu Chantelois, executive director of Pride Toronto
—
“Shocked and heartbroken by the news of the #Orlando terrorist attack. Our thoughts are with the entire #LGBTQ2S community.” Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.
—
“We stand with Orlando and the #LGBT community today (and) always.” NDP leader Tom Mulcair.
—
“You can’t live in fear because of one incident.” Cameron Rennie, a manager and bartender at Woody’s, a prominent gay bar in Toronto.
