The Latest: Alaska police officer was shot as he took cover

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Latest on the shooting of an Alaska police officer (all times local):

3:15 p.m.

Alaska prosecutors say a suspect shot and seriously wounded a Fairbanks police officer last weekend as the officer tried to take cover behind his patrol car.

Details of the shooting early Sunday were revealed in a criminal complaint filed Wednesday against 29-year-old man Anthony George Jenkins-Alexie.

He is charged with attempted murder and other felony counts in the wounding of Sgt. Allen Brandt.

Brandt a few minutes after midnight Sunday responded to shots fired and spotted Jenkins-Alexie walking toward the patrol car.

Prosecutors say Jenkins-Alexie pulled a handgun from his pocket, rushed toward the driver’s side door and shot Brandt as he tried to reach the back of the car.

Brandt fired back but fell.

Prosecutors say Jenkins-Alexie stood over Brandt, took his gun, stomped on Brandt’s head and stole the patrol car.
