Vernon poppy donation thief arrested

VERNON – Police have arrested a Vernon man in connection with what they call a ‘despicable’ theft last week.

Matthew Stadel, 29, was arrested Nov. 6 and charged with a series of thefts, RCMP Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy says.

Stadel is accused of stealing a jar of poppy donations from Bosley’s pet store on Nov. 2. He also faces charges of theft in relation to a stolen tip jar at Kalamalka Wine and Spirits and merchandise at London Drugs.

Video surveillance footage was key to the investigation, Noseworthy says. Police also received some tips from the public, but say they already had a pretty good idea who they were looking for. Stadel has a history with police and also faces a charge for breaching his probation.

Noseworthy says unfortunately, poppy donation thefts are seen every year.

“This is just kind of despicable to be honest.”

Stadel is expected to appear in Vernon Provincial Court Nov. 9, 2015.
