Penticton man learns police cars are not a good carjacking target

SURREY – A Penticton man who had plans to steal a car didn’t anticipate his victims would be two undercover officers from the Surrey RCMP.

Around 6:25 p.m. yesterday, Nov. 9, the officers stopped near 71 Avenue and 135 Street when a male approached the vehicle and tried to pull the plainclothes officer from the driver’s seat.

“The officers identified themselves as police officers and arrested the would-be thief,” Cpl. Scotty Schumann says in a media release. “This had the potential to be a frightening incident and we are thankful that our officers were in the right place at the right time to take this person into custody. The suspect got the ride he wanted, but probably not to the location he was hoping for."

The man was identified as 25-year-old Kyle Blair Berg from Penticton. Berg also had a warrant for wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime and a breach of probation.
