Advance arena voting gets underway in Vernon

VERNON – Greater Vernon residents can start casting ballots for or against a new arena this week.

Advance voting for the expansion of Kal Tire Place with a second ice sheet opens Wednesday, Nov. 18. The next opportunity for advance voting is Nov. 25, and general voting day will be held Saturday, Nov. 28.

You can vote early at any of the three following locations between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.: Regional District of North Okanagan, Vernon City Hall and the Coldstream Municipal Office.

The question on the ballot will ask voters if they support borrowing up to $13.2 million to replace Civic Arena by adding a second ice sheet at Kal Tire Place.

Local government officials say it’s imperative that the aging Civic Arena be replaced. The 80-year-old building is said to be at risk of an imminent failure and the cost to keep it operational for the next 10 years is approximately $10.7 million.
