This popular city road might be up for a name change

KELOWNA – One of the Mission’s most used roads could be in line for a name change.

Swamp Road is a major, two-lane road connecting Casorso with DeHart. On Monday, Coun. Andre Blanleil said he has heard complaints from several area residents who feel the name is less than attractive.

“Some of the neighbours in the area of Swamp Rd. were asking about renaming it,” he says. “Swamp isn’t exactly a family name.”

Blanleil suggested a new name should have a local connection and put forward that of a family who has been farming along Swamp Rd. for close to a century.

“I know the Rissos had their family farm on Swamp Road for many, many years,” he says.

According to city maps, there is already a Risso Rd. within city limits, however it's more theoretical. It's listed as being in the middle of an empty field behind the SPCA on Casorso.

“Somewhere out in a field there actually is (supposed to be) a Risso Rd. but there is no road there,” he says.

Staff have agreed to look into a possible name change and plans to return to council with their findings sometime in the near future.
