TRUSU president says fee situation ‘out of control’

TRU Students' Union President Dylan Robinson is unhappy about an increase to tuition fees come fall of this year.

Tuition will rise two per cent, which means about $38 more for a full-time domestic student per semester. TRU vice president of advancement, Christopher Seguin says fees rise with costs, but regulations in place prevent fees from getting out of control.

While an extra $40 or so every four months may seem minor, Robinson says fees were unaffordable before tacking on the extra weight to already financially strained students.

He says fees at the university have increased nearly 250 per cent between 2002 and the 2012/2013 fiscal year.

"We're not moving in the right direction."

While some students were surprised they weren't proactively made aware of the increase, Robinson says TRUSU has a long-standing campaign at the students union to lobby for tuition fees.

"I think anybody that has gone through (post secondary education) knows that the fee situation is out of control."
