"THEY CAN BE IN AND OUT IN TWO MINUTES"
Enjoying the spring air through an open window could cost you some valuable possessions. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says "green thumb burglars" are out and about now that the snow has thawed.
"We're starting into that time of year when the green thumb burglar comes back," Molendyk said. "Calls for service are already starting to climb."
Green thumb burglars stroll through neighbourhoods waiting for easy access into peoples' homes. Open windows and unlocked doors are their hallmark.
"When we come into nice warm weather, people are leaving windows open and doors unlocked," Molendyk said.
Leaving the front door unlocked while gardening in the backyard is like leaving an invitation for a burglar, Molendyk said.
"As people are out working in the garden, they're not paying as close attention," Molendyk said. "You just can't let your guard down. They can be in and out in two minutes."
Molendyk reminds the public to think about home security as the warm weather starts melting their precautions away.
"There are individuals that don't take a break from trying to steal, whether it's in your home, (or) online," Molendyk said.
While residents can take a break from locking out the cold, they're advised to keep an eye out for a new seasonal foe: the green thumb burglar.
