Florida inmate’s fake anthrax threat nets a 10-year sentence

PENSACOLA, Fla. – A Florida inmate scheduled to be released next year has gotten another 10 years in prison for sending fake anthrax to a state prosecutor.

Thirty-five-year-old Justin Lane was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison Thursday after pleading guilty to threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Lane was serving a 15-year sentence at the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution for burglary, robbery and other charges when he mailed a letter to the Polk County state attorney’s office in August 2017.

The letter contained a powdery substance and said, “die, die, die, ha, ha, ha, anthrax, goodbye.”

Lane was scheduled to be released from state prison next July. He’ll begin serving his federal term once he finishes serving his state sentence.
