One world kitchen — cooking up culinary tradition with seniors
PENTICTON – Multiple cooking demonstrations are being hosted throughout the South Okanagan. The star ingredients of these sessions are seniors, who are the chefs, audience and culinary experts. Dubbed OneWorld Kitchen, Senior Chef’s are providing a hands-on approach of food preparation while sharing a traditional recipe. To date, menu selections have included six cuisines: Indonesian, Hungarian, Thai, Chinese, Mexican, and Ukrainian.
Hosted in partnership with various community kitchens, churches, and Ethnic restaurants, OneWorld Kitchen is organized by the South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services.
“Food plays an important role in all cultures as it evokes treasured memories and tradition associated with the recipes” comments Tahira Saeed, program manager. “Sharing a recipe is not just about the ingredients, it ties culture to friendship — old and new.”
OneWorld Kitchen is supported by the government’s New Horizon grant. An additional three sessions are planned throughout November and December. Seniors are invited to register by calling SOICS at 250-492-6299.
SOICS is a one-stop shop that provides free services to all immigrants. The multi-lingual staffs works together with immigrants to help them get settled, find careers and learn all they need to know about starting their new lives in Canada.
