Penticton gets busy with sports, toy drives and agri-food

PENTICTON – The holiday season is rapidly approaching, and with it is an increasing number of events taking place in the city.

Wednesday Nov. 26, is a Wicked Wednesday event at the South Okanagan Events Centre as the Penticton Vees take on the Vernon Vipers. Tickets are $5 for adults and seniors, students aged 13 to 18 are free. Children under 12 are also free but must be accompanied by an adult. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the Valley First Box Office at the events centre and at the Wine Country Visitor Centre. Tickets can also be purchased online at ValleyFirstTIx.com and over the phone at 1-877-763-2849.

Gateway Gives and LocoLanding Community Toy Drive for Tots and Teens takes place at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre on Thursday, Nov. 26, from 6 tol 9 a.m. Bring a new, unwrapped gift for a child up to 18 years of age and get a free breakfast. For people in the business of food processing, manufacturing or farming, or those thinking of starting a business in any of these fields, there will be an agri-food business planning workshop at Community Futures in Penticton on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday,  Nov. 27. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. both days. Cost is $99 plus tax, per person, payable by cash or cheque only. The classes take place at the Penticton Community Futures office, suite 102, 3115 Skaha Lake Rd.

A Penticton B.C. Winter Games fundraiser takes place Thursday, Nov. 26, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Tugs Taphouse at 260 Martin St. in Penticton. Comedian Mitch Lavigne will provide entertainment for the $20 burger and beverage fundraiser and there will also be a live auction.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
