CENTERVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a woman who was recorded wrapping a seatbelt around her neck multiple times while being transported in handcuffs in the back of a patrol car.
The GBI tells news outlets 31-year-old Ashley Montine Gaultney died over the weekend, about three weeks after her arrest in Centerville.
J.T. Ricketson with the GBI says a camera in the car recorded her manipulating the seatbelt and wrapping it around her neck three times while the officer was taking her to jail.
Ricketson says the officer called an ambulance. He’s not been accused of excessive force.
Houston County District Attorney George Hartwig will decide what to do once his office gets the GBI’s full report.
Gaultney is survived by five children and a fiancee.
