Retailers sank Tuesday after Amazon said it will raise hourly wages for U.S. employees, and smaller companies continued to stumble. Manufacturers rose and the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished at a record high.
On Tuesday:
The S&P 500 index slid 1.16 points to 2,923.43.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 122.73 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 26,773.94.
The Nasdaq composite dropped 37.75 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 7,999.55.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks skidded 16.95 points, or 1 per cent, to 1,656.04.
For the week:
The S&P 500 index is up 9.45 points, or 0.3 per cent.
The Dow is up 315.63 points, or 1.2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 46.80 points, or 0.6 per cent.
The Russell 2000 is down 40.53 points, or 2.4 per cent.
For the year:
The S&P 500 is up 249.82 points, or 9.3 per cent.
The Dow is up 2,054.72 points, or 8.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 1,906.16 points, or 15.9 per cent.
The Russell 2000 is up 120.53 points, or 7.8 per cent.
