Court could OK construction on Lucas museum in Chicago

CHICAGO – A federal judge could decide to let construction begin on filmmaker George Lucas’ proposed art museum in Chicago.

But legal manoeuvrs and public statements preceding a Tuesday status hearing in a civil case aimed at halting the lakeside museum complicate Judge John Darrah’s decision.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel last week turned to an appeals court to seek the dismissal of the lawsuit filed by parks advocacy group, Friends of the Parks, which opposes the lakefront museum.

That move came after Lucas’ wife said the wrangling prompted them to look for sites in other cities.

Darrah has said he could lift an order halting construction while the litigation plays out. But he warned that builders would have to dismantle any structures if the parks group eventually prevails in court.
