Top aide of Brazil’s Temer resigns amid corruption scandal
RIO DE JANEIRO – A top adviser to embattled Brazilian President Michel Temer has resigned after being accused of being the middleman in an illegal campaign finance scheme.
Jose Yunes denies any wrongdoing in the resignation letter he released Wednesday. Yunes says he is leaving so he will not be an obstacle to his longtime friend.
Claudio Melo Filho, former director of the Odebrecht construction company, made the accusation against Yunes in a plea bargain case in an ongoing corruption scandal. He also accused Temer of illegal campaign financing in the testimony made public last week.
Temer also has denied any wrongdoing in the case.
Brazil’s president has already lost six Cabinet members during six months in office.
He assumed the presidency in May after former President Dilma Rousseff was impeached.
