Vernon firefighters rescue man stuck in dumpster

VERNON – Emergency responders in Vernon recently came to the aid of a man in a rotten situation.

Reported as a 'confined space rescue,' the unusual incident occurred when a man was taking out his garbage around 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.

He accidentally tossed his keys in the dumpster along with the trash, and while trying to retrieve them fell in himself, deputy fire chief Lawrie Skolrood says.

“(Responders) were able to lift the person out of the dumpster,” Skolrood says. “He had a little cut on his hand, they cleaned and bandaged it.”

Skolrood isn’t sure exactly how long the man was stuck inside the dumpster, but says it ‘wasn’t very long'.

It may seem like an odd call for the fire department, but Skolrood says they’ve had odder ones.
