Guyana extends bar, nightclub hours for independence bash

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Revelers celebrating the 50th anniversary of Guyana’s independence will be able to party a little bit later than usual.

The South American nation is letting bars, discos, nightclubs and outdoor festivals stay open until 4 a.m. through May 30, relaxing the usual mandatory 2 a.m. last call at such venues.

The Public Safety Ministry announced the measure Saturday.

Guyana gained independence from Britain on May 26, 1966, and became a republic in February 1970.

The Tourism Ministry expects about 30,000 people to attend the independence jubilee. Police say they will bolster security for the celebrations.
