Hearing set on ship sale needed to release stranded sailors
SAVANNAH, Ga. – A federal judge has scheduled a hearing next week to finalize the sale of a cargo ship that’s been stuck off the Georgia coast with 15 crew members aboard for nearly four months.
The Newlead Castellano fetched a winning bid of $7.4 million this week when it was sold at auction. The ship’s crew has remained on board since creditors had the ship seized in April while it was docked in Savannah. Creditors filed suit saying the ship’s owner owed them $7.1 million.
A U.S. District Court judge Wednesday scheduled a hearing to confirm the sale Monday.
Alan Swimmer is the court-appointed custodian for the ship and its crew. He says once a judge approves the sale, the sailors will be able fly home. Most of them are from the Philippines.
