KAMLOOPS – RCMP are warning the public of pin pad fraud in the city after receiving three reports of attempts since June 13.
The method scammers are using involves the suspect’s initial transaction being declined at which time they offer to try another payment option. The suspect continues to handle the pin pad machine and appears to be trying to complete the transaction and during this time a key sequence is entered in an attempt to give themselves a credit. Police say the suspects may have been successful on one of the attempts.
Investigators are comparing the three instances to determine if the cases involve the same suspect(s).
Merchants are being warned to review their debit machine protocols with staff, ensuring that all transactions are either entered by clerks, or supervised by clerks.
